ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੇਵਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਅਧਾਰਾ ॥
(ਹੇ ਪੰਡਿਤ!) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ-ਭਗਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਬਣਾ,
Selfless service is the support of the breath of life of the Gurmukh.
ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਉਰ ਧਾਰਾ ॥
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾ ਕੇ ਰੱਖ,
Keep the Dear Lord enshrined in your heart.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੋਭਾ ਸਾਚ ਦੁਆਰਾ ॥੧॥
(ਹੇ ਪੰਡਿਤ!) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਤੂੰ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰੇਂਗਾ ।੧।
The Gurmukh is honored in the Court of the True Lord. ||1||
ਪੰਡਿਤ ਹਰਿ ਪੜੁ ਤਜਹੁ ਵਿਕਾਰਾ ॥
ਹੇ ਪੰਡਿਤ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਪੜ੍ਹ (ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਵਿਕਾਰ ਛੱਡ ।
O Pandit, O religious scholar, read about the Lord, and renounce your corrupt ways.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਉਜਲੁ ਉਤਰਹੁ ਪਾਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
(ਹੇ ਪੰਡਿਤ!) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਤੂੰ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਜਾਏਂਗਾ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
The Gurmukh crosses over the terrifying world-ocean. ||1||Pause||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਇ ॥
(ਹੇ ਪੰਡਿਤ!) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆਂ ਮਨ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ,
The Gurmukh eradicates egotism from within.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਆਇ ॥
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆਂ (ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੀ) ਮੈਲ ਆ ਕੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਚੰਬੜਦੀ
No filth sticks to the Gurmukh.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥੨॥
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ।੨।
The Naam, the Name of the Lord, comes to dwell within the mind of the Gurmukh. ||2||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਸਚਿ ਹੋਈ ॥
(ਹੇ ਪੰਡਿਤ!) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਿਹਾਂ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨਤਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਇਹੀ ਹੈ ਅਸਲੀ) ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ।
Through karma and Dharma, good actions and righteous faith, the Gurmukh becomes true.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ਜਲਾਏ ਦੋਈ ॥
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਤੇ ਮੇਰ-ਤੇਰ ਸਾੜ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The Gurmukh burns away egotism and duality.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥੩॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੩।
The Gurmukh is attuned to the Naam, and is at peace. ||3||
ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨੁ ਪਰਬੋਧਹੁ ਬੂਝਹੁ ਸੋਈ ॥
(ਹੇ ਪੰਡਿਤ! ਪਹਿਲਾਂ) ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਜਗਾਓ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਹਸਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝੋ ।
Instruct your own mind, and understand Him.
ਲੋਕ ਸਮਝਾਵਹੁ ਸੁਣੇ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥
(ਹੇ ਪੰਡਿਤ! ਤੁਹਾਡਾ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਸੁੱਤਾ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ, ਪਰ) ਤੁਸੀ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦੇਂਦੇ ਹੋ (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਦੇ) ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਸਿੱਖਿਆ) ਨਹੀਂ ਸੁਣਦਾ ।
You may preach to other people, but no one will listen.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਮਝਹੁ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥੪॥
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਤੁਸੀ ਆਪ (ਸਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰਸਤਾ) ਸਮਝੋ, ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਿਲੇਗਾ ।੪।
The Gurmukh understands, and is always at peace. ||4||
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਡੰਫੁ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥
ਹੇ ਪੰਡਿਤ!) ਆਪਣੇ ਹੀ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਧਾਰਮਿਕ) ਵਿਖਾਵਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਬੜੀ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ਵਿਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
The self-willed manmukhs are such clever hypocrites.
ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਸੁ ਥਾਇ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥
(ਪਰ ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਉਹ) ਆਪ (ਅਮਲੀ ਜੀਵਨ) ਕਮਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀਆਂ ਨਜ਼ਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਪਰਵਾਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ,
No matter what they do, it is not acceptable.
ਆਵੈ ਜਾਵੈ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਕਾਈ ॥੫॥
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਦੀ ਕੋਈ ਥਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦੀ ।੫।
They come and go in reincarnation, and find no place of rest. ||5||
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੇ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਅਭਿਮਾਨਾ ॥
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਆਪਣੇ ਵਲੋਂ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ) ਕਰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ
The manmukhs perform their rituals, but they are totally selfish and conceited.
ਬਗ ਜਿਉ ਲਾਇ ਬਹੈ ਨਿਤ ਧਿਆਨਾ ॥
(ਪਰ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਬਹੁਤ ਮਾਣ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਬਗਲੇ ਵਾਂਗ ਹੀ ਸਮਾਧੀ ਲਾ ਕੇ ਬੈਠਦਾ ਹੈ ।
They sit there, like storks, pretending to meditate.
ਜਮਿ ਪਕੜਿਆ ਤਬ ਹੀ ਪਛੁਤਾਨਾ ॥੬॥
ਉਹ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਪਛੁਤਾਵੇਗਾ ਜਦੋਂ ਮੌਤ ਨੇ (ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਰੋਂ ਆ) ਫੜਿਆ ।੬।
Caught by the Messenger of Death, they shall regret and repent in the end. ||6||
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥
(ਹੇ ਪੰਡਿਤ!) ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਦੰਭ ਆਦਿਕ ਤੋਂ) ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ ।
Without serving the True Guru, liberation is not obtained.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਮਿਲੈ ਹਰਿ ਸੋਈ ॥
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਉਹ (ਘਟ ਘਟ ਦੀ ਜਾਣਨ ਵਾਲਾ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ।
By Guru's Grace, one meets the Lord.
ਗੁਰੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਜੁਗ ਚਾਰੇ ਹੋਈ ॥੭॥
(ਹੇ ਪੰਡਿਤ! ਸਤਜੁਗ ਕਲਜੁਗ ਆਖ ਆਖ ਕੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਜੁਗ ਦੇ ਜ਼ਿੰਮੇ ਬੁਰਾਈ ਲਾ ਕੇ ਗ਼ਲਤੀ ਨਾਹ ਖਾਹ) ਚੌਹਾਂ ਜੁਗਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਦਾਤਿ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ।੭।
The Guru is the Great Giver, throughout the four ages. ||7||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਤਿ ਪਤਿ ਨਾਮੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
(ਹੇ ਪੰਡਿਤ!) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੱੁਖ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਉੱਚੀ ਜਾਤਿ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਉੱਚੀ ਕੁਲ ਹੈ,
For the Gurmukh, the Naam is social status, honor and glorious greatness.
ਸਾਇਰ ਕੀ ਪੁਤ੍ਰੀ ਬਿਦਾਰਿ ਗਵਾਈ ॥
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਮੰਨਦਾ ਹੈ । ਨਾਮਿ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਕੱਟ ਕੇ ਪਰੇ ਰੱਖ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ।
Maya, the daughter of the ocean, has been slain.
ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਝੂਠੀ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥੮॥੨॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ—ਹੇ ਪੰਡਿਤ!) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਂਜੇ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ਵਿਖਾਣੀ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹੈ ।੮।੨।
O Nanak, without the Name, all clever tricks are false. ||8||2||
